1 John 2:15-17: "Love not the world…."

Introduction:

God's Word says love is the highest attribute of mankind-

greater than faith,

bullet

greater than hope, (1 Cor. 13).

bullet

In the letter to the Church of Ephesus (Rev. 2:4,5), Christ condemns them because they have "left their first love."

Are we being guilty of having dangerous love affairs that Christ condemns?

I.  "…Men Shall Be Lovers of Their Own Selves" (2 Tim. 3:2).

A.  Luke 18: The Pharisee loved himself and went home unjustified.

B.  Prov. 6: 16 lists 7 abominations, which characterize self-love.

C.  Are you in love with yourself?

II.  "...The Love of Money" (1 Tim. 6:10).

A.  It caused the rich young ruler to turn away from Christ (Mark 10).

B.  The Apostle warns that those who covet money "have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

C.  The love of money caused Balaam to curse the people of God (Num. 22).

D.  Do you love money?

III. The Love of the Praise of Men (Matt. 6:5).

A.  Jesus said, "all their works they do for to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5).

B.  King Saul loved the praise of men.

C.  Do you do what you do to get the praise of men?

IV. "…Men Love Darkness Rather Than Light" (John 3:19.

A.  Men love darkness because their deeds are evil.

B.  Men love darkness because their foolish hearts are darkened.

C.  Daniel 5 is a picture of the evil of sin's night.

D.  Do you love darkness more than light?

V.  The Love for the World (1 John 2:15-17.

A.  Paul said, "For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world" (2 Tim. 4:10).

B.  Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt because she could not break from the world.

C.  The rich farmer died as a fool because he lived only for this world (Luke 12).

D.  Are you in love with this world?

VI. "…The Love of Pleasure More Than God" (2 Tim. 3:4

A.  Samson (Judg. 16:2).

B.  Belshazzar (Dan. 5).

C.  King Herod (Matt. 14).

D.  Has it become easy to justify skipping devotions, prayer, church services to enjoy worldly pleasures?

VII. "…They Loved Not Their Lives Unto Death" (Rev. 12:11).

A.  John the Baptist (Matt. 14).

B.  Steven (Acts 7).

C.  Paul the Apostle (2 Tim. 4).

D.  Are you willing to stand for Jesus, even in persecution?
