| Passage To
Study:
John 1:35-42
[35] Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. [36] And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” [37] The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. [38] Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” [39] He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). [40] One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. [41] He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). [42] And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone). What are the facts of the passage?:
What do those facts mean?: One
never knows the results of the simple witness to others of who Christ is.
Here we see Peter - brought to Christ by the simple, positive witness of
his brother. God uses even the humblest of witnesses. This is because (and
if) that witness has as its content the Gospel of God. It is interesting to note the ''Positive" content of the witness to Peter. This is something that can never be silenced. We can always tell the World what it is that we have found. Certainly this is not all of the Gospel by any means, but it well be sufficient to direct to life, if indeed it points to the Christ of the Bible. How do those facts apply to my life?: I do not always need to find a way to include all of the various aspects of Gospel truth in every conversation. I should seek to be sure that my witness is inclusive of all truth when I have multiple opportunities to bear witness, but I need not be so painfully systematic either. What I must do is see that all of my witness points to the Christ of the Scripture (as opposed to Christ as men imagine or wish that He is. What should I do in response?: I need to be seeking more opportunities to do this, direct men to Christ! I shouldn't be so concerned with winning arguments as I am with directing men to the Savior. |
