John 2:23-25 [23] Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. [24] But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, [25] And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. What are the facts of the passage?:
What do those facts mean?: I think this is a very difficult passage to make sense of because Christ's reaction to their belief is the exact opposite of what we would think His reaction would be. Many respond to Him and embrace His message. Yet, Christ refuses to commit Himself to them because He knew their hearts. More specifically, He knew what was ''in them". What was in them would lead them to abandon Him and cry out for His crucifixion just three short years later. This points to the fickleness of the heart of man. How do those facts apply to my life?: I need to understand that only God knows hearts and that the professions of men are not always what they appear to be because men frequently completely change their allegiance for no good reason. It is not that I should expect this to happen; that would be cynicism. Rather, I should be aware that it can happen and not be shocked or caught unprepared when it does. What should I do in response?: Be sure that I let God do the judging and simply act wisely on my part. |
