Passage To Study:

John 3:1-8

[Jn 3:1] There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. [2] This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” [3] Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” [4] Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” [5] Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. [6] “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ [8] “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

What are the facts of the passage?:

  • Nicodemus, specifically identified as both a Pharisee and a leader of the Jews, comes to see Jesus at night.

  • He acknowledges that Jesus was from God evidenced by the things He had done.

  • Jesus tells him that no one can get to heaven unless they are born-again.

  • Nicodemus thinks Christ is talking about physical birth and is mystified.

  • Jesus explains about the new birth.

  • Jesus says that the new birth is a matter of the work of the Spirit.

What do those facts mean?:

This is the beginning of a very profound passage. Books have been written about even these few verses and so these few lines will not compass their meaning. The idea that even one such as Nicodemus needed new birth is a powerful. If he, a powerful and "good'' man and a scrupulously religious man, yet needed the new birth; every one does! Verse 8 introduces a theological aspect to the conversation that is intriguing even if only because the concept seems unnecessary to the discussion. It really isn't , because the root idea is the need for God's righteousness versus man's righteousness and this verse introduces the concept.

How do those facts apply to my life?:

If one such as this needs the new birth; then I and everyone I know certainly do!

What should I do in response?:

Make my salvation sure!
