Passage To Study:

John 10:7-18

[7] Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. [8] “All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. [9] “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. [10] “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. [11] “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. [12] “But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. [13] “The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. [14] “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. [15] “As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. [16] “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. [17] “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. [18] “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

What are the facts of the passage?:

  • (Verse 7-8) - Jesus proclaims Himself to be the door and says that all who came before Him were thieves and robbers. He adds that the sheep did not hear their voices.

  • (Verse 9) - If anyone goes in, he will be saved and will find posture.

  • (Verse 10) - The thief's purposes are very different then the True Shepherds purposes.

  •  (Verse 11) - The good shepherd is completely dedicated to the protection  & welfare of the sheep.

  • (Verse 12-13) - The hireling  does not have that kind of devotion, but flees at danger.

  • (Verse 14) - Christ is the Good Shepherd and He knows and is known by His sheep.

  • (Verse 15) - Christ has intimate knowledge of the Father and He lays down His life for the sheep.

  • (Verse 16) - There are other sheep, not of this flock that he must bring. There will be one flock and one shepherd.

  • (Verse 17) - Therefore the Father loves Him because He lays down His life for the sheep that He might take it up again.

  • (Verse 18) - Christ has received power from God to lay down and take up His life. This He will do!

What do those facts mean?:

(Verse 7) - ''I am the Door" - Christ is the door by which any genuine and legitimate entry, whether speaking of Salvation or leadership, must be made. As we noted previously, the concepts here can apply and are certainly true of Salvation. However, the context indicates that this is primarily speaking of spiritual leadership and not salvation. There is no such thing as a legitimate spiritual leader whom Christ has not called. Any who are in the position of spiritual leadership apart from that calling are, in Christ's own words, thieves and robbers. They have gained access to the sheep illegitimately and are not there with God's blessing. They have snuck in and are there far their own ends and not to serve God's purposes.

''The Sheep" here speaks of the true church whereas the sheepfold would suggest the external church. Once we see that the application becomes obvious. There are many in leadership in the visible church today who fit into this category. They profess themselves to be godly men and women and to be doing the work of God when, in reality they are nothing more than thieves and robbers.

(Verse 8) - "All who came before me" - Of course, this is speaking of all those who, like the Pharisees, were pretenders to the office of spiritual leadership. It is not a reference to the Prophets of the OT or to any other legitimate spiritual leader.

It is appropriate to think of Ezek. 34:2-3 at this point. ''Woe unto the shepherds who feed themselves". 3 hey eat the fat of the flock but do not feed the sheep! How despicable is that! Luke 11:46 speaks of much the Same thing when it speaks of the experts in the Law adding horrible burdens to the people that they were not willing to lift a finger to move themselves.

(Verse 9) - ''By Me" of course,  refers to to entry by means of Christ's merit and His commission. Christ has broadened His comments to include the sheep as well. He is the door in that He provides the sole access to the genuine sheepfold. Whoever will enter by Him gains the benefits of the Father's sheepfold. Only the blood of Christ washing away sin and the merit or righteousness of Christ can secure entry, legitimate entry into the fold. Apart from entry by the door, whether one claims to be sheep or shepherd, they are subject to the Father's scrutiny and all who are there "illegally" well be cast out. Matthew 22:8-13 tells the story of a guest at a King's wedding feast who didn't have proper clothes and was bound and cost out into the outer darkness. This parable is speaking of the same idea. Except one be cleansed from sin and  clothed in the perfect garment of the spotless righteousness of Christ, one has no legitimate place at the wedding feast.

"Shall go in and out" is common language for the care, guidance and protection the shepherd gives to the sheep. This speaking of the benefits of being in the fold now.

(Verse 10) - This verse speaks to the design of the thief. He is in no way there for the benefit of the sheep. Any benefit derived by the sheep from their ministry is purely incidental and not a part of their (the thief's) design.

On the other hand, the aim of Christ, the true Shepherd, is purely for the benefit of the sheep.

''Might have it more abundantly" is literally ''Might have abundance" and denotes that which is not essential to life, but is "extra".

How do those facts apply to my life?:

It is my duty to feed the flock of God. The Pastor/Shepherd must be given to the service of God by means of the service, feeding, protecting, and guiding of the sheep.

What should I do in response?:

I must be the Shepherd of this flock. Their welfare spiritually must be my first concern. It must be my passion and my zeal for God must reflected in my zeal for them.
