Passage To Study:

John 16:25-28

[25] “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. [26] “In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; [27] “for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. [28] “I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

What are the facts of the passage?:

  • (Verse 25) - Jesus says He has spoken in figurative language but that the time is coming when He will not speak to them figuratively.

  • (Verse 26) - That day will not require His intercession any longer.

  • (Verse 27) - Then we will experience the love of the Father first hand.

  • (Verse 28) - Christ came from the Father and now He returns to the Father.

What do those facts mean?:

(Verse 25) - The implication of this verse is that the use of fugurative language served a purpose of God that was specifically earthly. The reason for the figures was entirely for human reasons and not for Divine ones. What I mean by this is that the cause was human. Christ has told us previous to this that the reason He speaks thus was, at least in part, So that His enemies would not understand and perhaps repent and believe. This reason, at least, is removed from necessity when we go to be with our Heavenly Father as there will no longer be any enemies of God present.

Won't it be wonderful that all of our communication with God will be clear and unmistakable! There will be no more scratching of the head and wondering what was meant by a given saying or statement. Then we will know and understand clearly and completely. There will no longer need to be teachers or preachers to explain the Word to us. We will each be completely able to interact with God for ourselves with no intermediary.

(Verse 26) - One glorious part of this truth us that we will then no longer need the intercession of Christ with the Father on our behalf. We will be present with the Father and will enjoy direct communion and communication with Him because we will then be perfected and free of any taint of sin or anything else that might interfere in our fellowship. No more will there be the barrier between us. With our salvation fully realized and redemption fully implemented there will be no cause for any go between to insulate us from His full glory. The reason there was (and is) a gulf fixed between God and His creature is the matter of sin. At the time Christ is speaking of, that problem is set aside, and is no longer an issue, having been fully settled. This barrier being out of the way, and God being fully and completely satisfied regarding sin; the only barrier to full fellowship by God with His creature is removed. Therefore, the need for an intercessor is gone as well. God and his creature are free to fellowship face-to-face.

How do those facts apply to my life?:

What a glorious thing to look forward to! What a marvelous testimony to the efficacy of the work of Christ. This is the moment when that work is realized in its fullest and we are present with the Father, gloriously pure and free from any taint of sin. How wonderful to be and do that which we created for - have perfect fellowship with the Father!

What should I do in response?:

I need to preach this more! It needs to be a part of my exhortation to the Church!
