Passage To
Study:
John 18:1-9
[1] When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. [2] And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. [3] Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. [4] Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” [5] They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. [6] Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. [7] Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” [8] Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” [9] that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.” What are the facts of the passage?:
What do those facts mean?: (Verse
1) - We are
struck immediately with the deliberate purposefulness of Christ's actions.
It is all over the first 4 verses of this chapter. In the Upper Room He
had feel the disciples of His coming betrayal and of His coming death. He
had told them if His departure from this world and of His plans to provide
for them. He knew that Judas had gone and what he had gone to do. We
are told that He deliberately went to a place where all of them had gone
before and where Judas would know to look for Him. He deliberately
identifies Himself to them not once, but twice. He demonstrates His Divine
power by knocking them all down, then yields to them. He commands them to
let the disciples go, but gives Himself into their hands. We
are told that Jesus knew all that would come upon Him and yet He pursued
the course set before Him anyway. How true the Word of God is when it
proclaims the great love that God has His Children! I am reminded of the
hymn that extols the love of God. If the sky was a scroll and the ocean
was ink there still wouldn't be enough to write all about the love of God.
Such love goes far beyond the bounds of normal action. It goes above and
beyond and labors long and hard to do what God requires of it. (Verse
6) - This
deliberate manner in which Christ is acting is underscored and emphasized
by the events described in I his verse. Those who came to take Christ are,
to the man, knocked down and overcome by the word of His power. They
cannot stand against the merest expression of the power that was at His
disposal. They had no chance against Him whatsoever. In the basest
expression of His omnipotence He is completely overpowering. Yet, He
returns and asks them once again whom they seek and then He submits to
them and allows them to take Him. Allows, by the way, is the only term
that can apply. He allowed them to take Him into custody. Again we must
acknowledge what tremendous love this shows. It also shows tremendous submission to God. God had called Him to a task that was incredibly difficult. It required an immense and unthinkable cost on His part. He was God's servant and was given to God's service. What God required; He did. In order to accomplish the function the Father required, the Son had to submit to the Father's will regardless of the personal price it required. It also shows a remarkable diligence and perseverance on His part. Despite what priest have been tremendous temptation to "let this cup pass" Christ went on and actually did what God had called Him to do. I don't think you and I understand this kind if pressure. Jesus was given to serving God and He was given to the fulfilling of God's will no matter what it took to get it accomplished. How do those facts apply to my life?: The
single-minded devotion of Christ to accomplishing the will of God is
inspirational. It demonstrates to us what kind of devotion to obedience to
God gets the job done. Christ stands as the prime example of consecration
to the purpose and plan of God regardless of the personal cost. What should I do in response?: |
