Passage To Study:

Psalm 47:1-9

[1] Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!
Shout to God with the voice of triumph!
[2] For the LORD Most High is awesome;
He is a great King over all the earth.
[3] He will subdue the peoples under us,
And the nations under our feet.
[4] He will choose our inheritance for us,
The excellence of Jacob whom He loves.
Selah

[5] God has gone up with a shout,
The LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
[6] Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
[7] For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with understanding.
[8] God reigns over the nations;
God sits on His holy throne.

[9] The princes of the people have gathered together,
The people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.

Flow of the Passage:

  • (Verse 1-4) - Praise is exhorted because of God's terrible power and authority. He will defeat our enemies and give us our inheritance because of His love.

  • (Verse 5-6) - God has gone to war. We should praise Him.

  • (Verse 7-9) - God is King over all, we should praise Him with understanding. All of the might on the earth belongs to God and we should exalt Him.

What Do I Think About It?

(Verse 1-4) - It is interesting that God is said to be going to win victory for His people because of His love for them. I am certain that this is not the only reason; in fact, the Scripture  gives us several reasons. However, this is as powerful a reason as any that are given.

(Verse 5-6) - The reference to the shout and the trumpet are references to going to war. The shout and the trumpet were actions taken that signaled the going forth of the host to battle. The picture is of a King going forth to wage war on behalf of His Kingdom.

(Verse 7-9) - God is the King of all and all serve His Kingly purposes. This is among His greatest glories.

What Difference Does This Make To  Me?

Once again we see the affirmation that God is in control. This must make a difference both in the way we think about things as well as the way in which we live our lives in light of those truths. We should live differently and think differently if all of this is true.

Is There Anything For Me To Do?

I must discipline my thoughts to conform to the truths of this passage.
