Supernal Perfections - Omniscience
The Limitless Knowledge and Wisdom of God

VFBC Home | Bible Studies Home | Sovereign Grace Home

  • There is nothing that can be conceivably known that God does not know.

  • His infinite knowledge embraces all possible events, whether in the past of human experience, or yet to come.

  • Not only does He possess infinite knowledge of all that can be known, but He has equally infinite wisdom with which to apply His knowledge to the furtherance of any purpose that pleases Him.

1.   God's omniscience (infinite knowledge) includes all objects and events of creation.

  • Psalm 147:4-5

  • He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. 5Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;

  • Isa. 48:13

  • Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, And My right hand has stretched out the heavens; When I call to them, They stand up together.

  • Heb. 4:13

  • And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

2.   God's infinite knowledge of his creation includes all events, whether past or yet to come.

  • Isa. 42:9

  • Behold, the former things have come to pass, And new things I declare; Before they spring forth I tell you of them.

  • Isa. 44:7

  • And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, Since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, Let them show these to them.

  • Isa. 45:21b-22

  • 21   Tell and bring forth your case; Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me. 22 Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

  • Isa. 46:9-11

  • 9 Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,  10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, 'My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,'  11 Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.

  • Isa. 48:5

  • Even from the beginning I have declared it to you; Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you, Lest you should say, 'My idol has done them, And my carved image and my molded image Have commanded them.'

3.   God's infinite knowledge reaches even to the thoughts and motives of all men.

  • 1 Chron. 28:9

  • As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.

  • Job 23:10

  • But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

  • Ps. 33:13-15

  • 13   The LORD looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men.   14 From the place of His dwelling He looks On all the inhabitants of the earth;  15 He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.

  • Ps. 139:1-7

  • 1     O LORD, You have searched me and known me. 2You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. 5 You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

  • Prov. 19:21

  • There are many plans in a man's heart, Nevertheless the LORD'S counsel-that will stand.

  • Jer. 23:24

  • Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him? says the LORD; Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the LORD.

  • Ezek. 11:5

  • Then the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said to me, Speak! 'Thus says the LORD: Thus you have said, O house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind.

  • John 21:17

  • He said to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, Do you love Me?

4.   God's infinite knowledge includes the needs of His creatures, even before they ask.

  • Matt. 6:8

  • Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

  • Matt. 10:29-30

  • 29Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. 30But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

5.   God's omniscience is equated with His glory, and is a just cause for praise and adoration.

  • Rom. 11:33

  • Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

  • Eph. 3:10-11

  • 10to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,
